Is Beethoven House worth visiting? ›

It's outside of the city center but easily accessible by public transportation. Small museum in Beethoven's residence (a former bakery). This small museum has a few interactive activities throughout five rooms. Worth visiting for anyone involved in music history and education.

1780–1792: Bonn.

It was not until 1792, a year after Mozart's death, that Beethoven traveled to Vienna again to take lessons with Joseph Haydn. His return to Bonn was thwarted by the occupation of the Rhineland by French troops. Beethoven therefore remains in Vienna until the end of his life.

Beethoven's birthplace and dwelling

The house at Bonngasse 20, where composer Ludwig van Beethoven was born in December 1770, is one of the few remaining houses in Bonn built in the 18th century. Its baroque stone facade was erected over cellars dating back to the 12th or 13th century.

Funeral and burial

The funeral was held on 29 March 1827 at the parish church in Alsergrund, and he was buried in the Währing cemetery, northwest of Vienna. Many thousands of citizens lined the streets for the funeral procession.

Today his grave is in Vienna's Zentralfriedhof cemetery (show map), grave no. 29 in group 32a. This group is dedicated to famous composers, among others Schubert and Brahms. There is no charge to visit the cemetery.

Beethoven began to lose his hearing at age 28. By age 44, his hearing loss was complete, most likely caused by compression of the eighth cranial nerve associated with Paget's disease of bone.

It is believed that Beethoven died from liver and kidney disease at age 56. But the process of understanding what caused his many health problems has been a much more complicated puzzle, one that even Beethoven himself hoped doctors could eventually solve.

Johann's famous son Ludwig van Beethoven had no children and was never married, but his second son, Karl, did have children. However, none of Karl's living descendants now bears the name of Beethoven, the last to do so, Karl Julius Maria van Beethoven, having died without a son in 1917.

According to the story Mozart gives Beethoven a chance to play on the piano to introduce himself. Beethoven charms him and Mozart says: “Mark that young man; he will make himself a name in the world!”.

Among the many, probably the most famous is the one, where he passed away on March 26th, 1827. The house was called Schwarzspanierhaus, meaning black Spanish house. Today, the exact address is Schwarzspanierstraße 15, 1090 Vienna. Beethoven used to live on the second floor, overlooking a meadow.
