Hugh Brannum of Saylorsburg, who for 30 years played Mr. Green Jeans, the friendly farmer, handyman and unsuccessful inventor on “Captain Kangaroo,” has died at age 77.
Brannum died Sunday of cancer in East Stroudsburg, according to Bob Keeshan, his long-time co-star who played Captain Kangaroo on the children’s show.
“People will remember him for the animals he showed us and the rural America he showed us in a very real way,” Keeshan said yesterday in New York City. “They’ll remember him for his caring and his gentleness, which was very real,” Keeshan said. “So many millions grew up with him as a good friend.
“Hugh was hardly an actor; he was really playing himself,” said Keeshan. “He wasn’t hiding in a character. His avocation was as a farmer. That was his existence for many years and his heart was in the country. He liked nothing better than to putter in the garden.
“I’m going to miss him,” he added. “But you can’t lose a friendship like that because it goes on.”
Brannum, a lanky 6-footer who was nicknamed “Lumpy,” was born on Jan. 5, 1910, the son of a Methodist minister, in Sandwich, Ill. He moved to California at an early age and graduated from Redlands University.
He started in show business in 1929, playing bass fiddle at a small California radio station.
After appearing with dance bands throughout California, he and three other men billed as “The Four Squires” went to New York City. Orchestra leader Fred Waring heard them and hired the quartet in 1940. Brannum remained with Waring’s group “The Pennsylvanians” as a bass player.
He joined the Marines in 1943 and was subsequently stationed in Guam with the 3rd Marine Division.
Following his discharge in 1945, he rejoined Waring and soon began writing the bandleader’s television show in addition to playing in the band.
Brannum later wrote songs for children’s records including “Hubert the Horse” and “Little Orley Stories.”
Brannum joined the CBS “Captain Kangaroo” show as Mr. Green Jeans when it premiered on Oct. 3, 1955, and was with the show until it went off the air in 1985.
It is now in reruns on public television.
Brannum is survived by his widow Joan of Saylorsburg, and a son Tom of New York.
